Fit for Duty

Policy Key Points

  • Performing work while under the influence of over-the-counter or prescription drugs that can cause drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue or sleepiness, or disorientation, can lead to injuries to the associate taking the medicine and/or to other associates.
  • Associates must notify their supervisor, another member of management, or Human Resources if they are taking an over-the-counter or prescription medicine that can affect their ability to safely perform their job.

Policy

Purpose and Scope of this Policy

Yaskawa America, Inc. is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our associates. Such an environment is possible only when each associate is able to perform their duties in a safe, secure, and effective manner – and remains able to do so throughout the entire time they are working. Associates who are not fit for duty may present a safety risk to themselves or others.


Scope

This policy applies to all associates in all locations.


Responsibilities

Managers and Supervisors are responsible for:

  • Ensuring associates are knowledgeable of the requirements of this policy, including:
    • Immediately reporting to their supervisor if they are unable to safely perform their assigned duties for any reason,
    • Reporting if they are taking over-the-counter or prescription medications that may impair their ability to work safely,
  • Monitor associate activities and behaviors to determine if associates should be removed from the worksite

All associates are responsible for:

  • Ensuring they are physically capable of performing their job function prior to performing any task,
  • Immediately reporting to their supervisor, another member of management, or Human Resources if they are taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs that may impair their ability to work safely.
    • NOTE: Associates must only report that they are taking a medicine that can affect their ability to safely perform the job. Associates should not report the specific medication that they are taking.
    • For associates who perform any of the activities listed below, immediately report to supervisor, manager, or Human Resources, if they are taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs that indicate it may cause drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue/sleepiness, or disorientation:
      • Driving to, from, or working at a customer or vendor facility
      • Working on or near live exposed electrical conductors
      • Working on or near powered industrial vehicles (eg: fork lifts, order pickers)
      • Working on or near overhead cranes
      • Working on or near industrial machiners (eg: power saws, grinders)
      • Working on or near industrial robots or manipulators

Results of Breaches of Policy

Breaching this policy may result in an injury. Breaches of this policy may result in disciplinary action being initiated in accordance with Yaskawa America's discipline policy.


Training

All associates shall be provided with training related to this policy including preventing, recognizing, and managing fatigue.
