Tornado at or Near Yaskawa Facility or Worksite

Get associates to the primary and secondary storm shelters. Tell them to crouch down and cover their heads.

DO NOT ALLOW ASSOCIATES TO GO NEAR WINDOWS TO WATCH THE TORNADO APPROACH, EVEN IF IT'S STILL FAR AWAY. THEY CAN TRAVEL AND CHANGE DIRECTION FAST.

Severe Thunderstorm at or Near Yaskawa Facility or Worksite

In a Yaskawa facility:
  1. Facilities and OPS will monitor the weather. During a Thunderstorm Warning, check with the Emergency Coordinator before any business travel.
  2. It is safe to test products in Yaskawa labs and production test stations. Any tester has the right to refuse to perform electrical testing during active lightening.
 Remote Worksite (eg: Field Service, Supplier Visit, etc.)
  1. Follow the instructions from the host company.
  2. DO NOT perform any outdoor service during an active thunderstorm or thunderstorm warning.

Blizzard at or Near Yaskawa Facility or Worksite

At or near a Yaskawa Facility:
  1. Facilities and OPS will monitor the weather. Any site closings will be communicated via email and the facilities closure hotline number.
  2. Use your discretion for allowing associates to travel for business. During a blizzard warning, check with the site Emergency Coordinator before allowing business travel.    
Remote Worksite
  1. Follow instructions from host company.
  2. Do not travel to remote field service sites during an active blizzard or blizzard warning.
  3. Do not perform any live electrical testing with exposed conductors when it is snowing.

Extreme Temperatures at or Near Yaskawa Facility or Worksite

At or near a Yaskawa Facility:
  1. All Yaskawa facilities are temperature controlled. Extreme temperatures should not be a factor in Yaskawa facilities.
Remote Worksite
  1. If the associate will work in extreme temperatures, Yaskawa management must ensure they have access to potable water at no cost to the associate.
  2. Allow the associate to take frequent breaks in the shade or in the car with the air conditioner on.
  3. Associates working in extreme temperatures must be monitored for:

Life-Threatening Symptoms

  • High Body Temperature (in extreme heat)
  • Low Body Temperature (in extreme cold)  
  • Confusion 
  • Fainting
  • Red, Hot, Dry skin
  • Convulsions

Other Symptoms to Watch for

  • Fatigue
  • Heavy Sweating
  • Headache
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Cramps
  • Dizziness
  • High Pulse Rate
  • Low Pulse Rate

Heat Illness Prevention - California Requirements

 Yaskawa management is responsible for:

  1. Making sure associates in high-heat areas have access to potable drinking water at all times at no cost to the associate.
  2. Provide access to shade or another method for cooling down when temperatures exceed 80°F.
    • The shade from an electrical enclosure or vehicle is not sufficient.
    • Allowing the associate to sit in the car with the air conditioner on is acceptable.
  3. When temperatures meet or exceed 95°F, supervisors must ensure effective communication with the associate is maintained via phone communication.
    • Do not allow the associate to work alone in high heat environments.
  4. Monitor the associate for signs of heat stress. These symptoms include: 
  5. Life-Threatening Symptoms

    • High Body Temperature (in extreme heat)
    • Low Body Temperature (in extreme cold)  
    • Confusion 
    • Fainting
    • Red, Hot, Dry skin
    • Convulsions

  6. Supervisors shall ensure associates on their team are aware of these procedures and the signs and symptoms of heat stress.
  7. Associates who are newly assigned to high heat areas must be monitored for a minimum of 14 days as the associate acclimates to the temperatures
