Penetrating and Puncturing Wounds

DO NOT REMOVE ANY PENETRATING OBJECTS

  1. If there is a penetrating object, professional medical help is required.
  2. If there is a penetrating object, you can wrap a gauze bandage around your fingers or hand to make a donut then place the hole of the donut over the object. Use another gauze bandage to wrap over and around the donut in a figure 8 around the penetrating object. DO NOT put any pressure or hide the penetrating object.
  3. For small puncture wounds without a penetrating object:
    •  Wash your hands
    • Thoroughly clean the wound
    • Ask the person if they want you to apply antibacterial ointment from the first aid kit
    • Place a sterile dressing on the wound
    • Bandage the dressing
    • If bleeding continues, add another dressing on top of the existing bandage. DO NOT remove the existing dressing.

Get Immediate Medical attention for:

  • Any penetrating wounds where the object is still embedded
  • Puncture wounds of the eyes, face, neck, throat, chest, abdomen, or groin
