If someone is having breathing problems, call 911. If the person stops breathing, call 911 and commence CPR if you are trained.
Symptoms
Breathing problems can range from:
Shortness of breath,
Being unable to take a deep breath or gasping for air
Feeling like you're not getting enough air
There are many conditions that can lead to shortness of breath.
First Aid
If someone is having breathing difficulties, call 911.
Loosen any tight clothing.
If the person has prescribed medicine (such as an inhaler or home oxygen) you may assist the person in delivering it.
YOU MAY NOT administer another persons prescribed medicine.
Continue to monitor the person's breathing until medical help arrives.
If breathing stops, commence CPR if you are trained to do so
If there are open wounds in the chest or neck:
Bandage wounds immediately.
If it is a chest wound and you see bubbles coming from the wound, use a chest seal from the first aid kit or place a piece of plastic (such as plastic wrap or a plastic bag or a plastic bag) over the wound and seal it in all but one corner. This prevents air from entering the chest (but not the lungs) and allows trapped air to escape.
DO NOT
Give the person an inhaler that was not prescribed to them
Give food or drink
Move the person if there has been a head, neck, or back injury unless it's absolutely necessary
Place a pillow under the person's head
Have the person breathe into a paper bag
