Poisoning and Overdose

Poisons can include:

  • Overdose of prescription or over-the-counter medications
  • Drugs and/or Alcohol
  • Harmful chemicals 

For the purpose of First Aid, the treatment is the same for poisonings and overdoses:

    DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER

    If the potential poison is environmental, do not enter the same environment.

    Never enter a confined space to retrieve a victim of hazardous chemicals.

  1. For an unconscious/unresponsive person where the cause is unknown, deliver Naloxone (Narcan) if it's available.
  2. Call the National Poison Control Center
  3. 800-222-1222

    then follow their directions

  4. Have a second person call 911
  5. Get as much information from the person or witnesses as possible:
    • Did the person swallow anything
    • Did the person inject anything
    • Did the person handle any chemicals
    • Is the person allergic to anything
  6. DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are instructed to do so by:
    • National Poison Control Center
    • 911 Dispatch
    • Instructions from Chemical Safety Data Sheet
  7. Monitor breathing and care for any life threatening conditions found
