First Aid

  1. Remove any clothing or debris from the wound.
    • Don't remove large or embedded objects
    • Don't probe the wound or attempt to clean it yet. Your first job is to control the bleeding.
    • Wear protective gloves, if possible.
  2. Stop the Bleeding
    Image of applying direct pressure
    • Place a sterile dressing or a clean cloth on the wound.
    • Press the dressing firmly to control bleeding. (Do not apply direct pressure on an eye injury or if there is an embedded object.
    • Apply constant pressure until the bleeding stops.
    • If the dressing becomes soaked with blood, add another dressing on top of the soaked dressing and continue to add pressure. Never remove a dressing once it's been applied.
  3. Secure the dressing with a bandage
    • Use gauze, tape, or clean cloth to secure the dressing in place.
    • If using gauze, you can twist the gauze above the dressing to hold it in place better.
    • Make sure the bandage is not cutting off circulation. Feel for a pulse below the dressing or press in on a fingernail or toenail then let go. Make sure the color quickly returns beneath the nail.
  4. If possible, ask the person to lie down. If the wound is an arm or leg, elevate the extremity where the wound exists.
