Eye  Injuries

 

 
 

Eye injuries other than grit in the eye or small scratches should be considered potentially serious and professional medical attention is advised.

For All Other Eye Injuries  

  • DO NOT touch, rub, or apply pressure to the eye
  • DO NOT try to remove any objects stuck in the eye
  • DO NOT apply ointment or medication to the eye
  • See a doctor as soon as possible
  • If you can't get to an ophthalmologist right away, go to critical care or the emergency room 

If Eye has been Cut or Punctured 

  • Gently place a protective cover over the eye
  • DO NOT put the shield against the eye or anything protruding from the eye
  • DO NOT remove any objects that are stuck in the eye
  • DO NOT rinse with water
  • DO NOT rub or apply pressure to the eye
  • After the eye has been protected, get emergency medical help 

Chemical Burns and Splashes in the Eye

  • Immediately flush the eye with plenty of clean water
  • Seek emergency help right away
  • Obtain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and provide it to the health care provider 

Non-Penetrating Foreign Object in the Eye

  1. DO NOT rub the eye
  2. Blink several times and allow tears to flush out the particle
  3. Use eyewash station, saline solution,k or running tap water to flush the eye out. Have the person use their fingers to keep eye(s) open
  4. For chemical splashes, the eyes must be washed for a minimum of 20 minutes
  5. For chemical splashes, have the person seek professional medical attention after the eye has been thoroughly irrigated. Obtain a copy of the Safety Data Sheet to provide to the health care provider
  6. For other debris in the eye, following irrigation, place a patch over the eye. Have the person seek medical attention if pain or difficulty with vision persists. 
  7. Seek emergency help right away
  8. Obtain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and provide it to the health care provider 

Scratch in the Eye

  1. DO NOT rub the eye
  2. Blink several times and allow tears to flush out the particle
  3. Use an eyewash station, saline solution, or running tap water to flush the eye out. Have the person use their fingers to keep eye(s) open.
  4.  Suggest the person wear sunglasses if their eye is sensitive to light.
  5. DO NOT use eye drops or ointments unless instructed to do so by a doctor
  6. The person should not wear contacts for at least 24-hours after the pain and redness goes away. 

Using the Eyewash Station

    Yaskawa uses a variety of types of eyewash stations but their operation is similar
  1. Pull the lid down
  2. Hold affected eye open
  3. Allow  the water to flush the eye until the tank is exhausted (approximately 15-minutes)
  4. If the debris remains in the eye, or if pain and redness persist, call the Nurse Hotline.
  5. Notify facilities and/or EHS that the eyewash station is empty and needs to be replenished. 
  6. Clean up any water that may have gotten on the floor
