Severe Abdominal Pain

Have the person go to their doctor or the emergency room if any of the following symptoms exist:

  • Severe Pain
  • Pain lasting several hours
  • Pain or vaginal bleeding if the person is pregnant
  • Pain in the scrotum if the person in male
  • Pain and vomiting or shortness of breath
  • Blood in the urine or bowel
  • Pain that spreads to the chest, neck, or shoulder
  • Fever and sweats
  • Pale and clammy skin
  • Unable to pass urine
  • Unable to move bowels or pass gas 
 

If any of the above conditions do not apply, you can have the person try these to help reduce discomfort:

  • Placing a hot water bottle on abdomen
  • Soaking in a warm bath
  • Drinking plenty of clear fluids, such as water
  • Avoiding intake of coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol
