Broken Bones

WARNING:

Continue to monitor breathing and control severe bleeding prior to providing aid for a bone fracture.

Symptoms

  • Pain at or near the site of the injury
  • Difficult or impossible to move normally
  • Loss of strength
  • Deformity or abnormal mobility
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration or bruising

First Aid

  1. Control any bleeding and cover any open wounds with a sterile dressing
  2. Ask the person to remain as still as possible
  3. Immobilize the fracture
    • Do not attempt to force a fracture or dislocation back into place
    • Do not twist or turn the person's head or neck unless absolutely necessary (there life is in danger if you don't move them)
    • Leave bent or deformed body parts in the same position when you apply the splint
    • Use a splint from the first aid kit, a rolled up towel, magazine, or wood.
    • The splint must be longer than the injured area and support the joints above and below the injury
    • use a triangular bandage or gauze roll from the first aid kit, or something that is at least 2" wide to tie the splint in place
    • Make sure the bandage is not too tight. Check for blood flow below the bandage by checking for pulse or pressing the fingernail or toenail, letting go and watching for the color to return.

Check for blood flow at least every 15 minutes. Swelling will occur and the bandage that was previously sufficiently loose may become too tight.

Loosen the bandage if necessary. (NEVER LOOSEN A TOURNIQUET)

The splint should extend past the joint above and the joint below.

Make sure the bandage is not too tight by checking for capillary refill. Press the fingernail until it turns white then let go. If the color does not immediately return, the bandage is too tight and must be loosened.
