Tornado While Outside or in a Motor Vehicle

Tornado while Outside

  1. If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy building - go to an interior room without windows.
  2. Stay away from sheds and storage buildings.
  3. There is less risk outside than standing near or inside a shed.

  4. If you cannot get to a sturdy building, get in as low an area as possible, crouch down, and cover your head.

Tornado while in a Motor Vehicle

  1. If possible, drive to the closest shelter.
  2. If you cannot get to a shelter, put your seatbelt on, get low, and cover your head.

DO NOT:

  1. Try to outrun the tornado.
  2. Park or take shelter beneath an overpass. The winds increase beneath an overpass and you are more likely to be struck by debris.
