Be Prepared

The best thing you can do to gain and maintain your control during an emergency is to be prepared.

  1. Study the Emergency Action Plans
  2.  Refer to this Emergency Response Web App frequently
  3.  Conduct "Mind Drills" by thinking about what you would do in various situations.

 When the Unthinkable Happens

  1. Engage the critical thinking area of the brain by taking a deep breath to slow your heart rate. Breathe in for a count of four, hold it for a count of four, and exhale for a count of four. These few seconds can save your life.
  2. Assess the situation:
    • What is the hazard?
    • How severe is the hazard?
    • Where is the hazard coming from?
  3. Think
    • Follow your training and instinct, not the crowd
    • Get yourself to safety
    • Call 911
    • Assist others if you can do so without putting yourself or others in danger
  4. Take Action

Repeat this cycle until the danger has passed for you and your team.
