Policy Key Points
- Environmental Risk Assessment: A formal Environmental Risk Assessment is required for all operations, updated annually or after significant changes. It evaluates risks related to air, water, waste, energy, emissions, and chemical use.
- Identification of Environmental Hazards: Environmental hazards are identified during monthly safety audits. Non-urgent concerns are reported via the “Report a Hazard” form; urgent issues are reported immediately to supervisors and EHS.
- Environmental Permits & Regulatory Reportin : Yaskawa obtains and maintains all required environmental permits (air, water, waste, stormwater, etc.), operates in compliance with permit conditions, and submits accurate and timely regulatory reports.
- Air Emissions : Process emissions (e.g., VOCs, particulates) are identified, controlled with appropriate abatement equipment, maintained per manufacturer/permit requirements, and monitored as required.
- Energy Use & Greenhouse Gas Emissions : Yaskawa measures and works to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 energy use and GHG emissions, and supports Yaskawa Group decarbonization targets and energy-efficiency initiatives (Environmental vision & targets, Green process).
- Water Stewardship : Yaskawa manages water use, protects water quality, implements wastewater and stormwater controls, and complies with applicable discharge permits/requirements.
- Materials Restrictions & Product Stewardship : Yaskawa complies with legal/customer restricted-substance requirements (e.g., RoHS/REACH where applicable) and applies Group green procurement and eco-design principles (Green products).
- Supplier Environmental Requirements : Suppliers must meet Yaskawa environmental expectations, including compliance with substance restrictions and proper environmental controls (see Yaskawa Procurement Guidelines).
- Waste Management: Yaskawa manages both hazardous (e.g., expired chemicals, blood-related biological waste, sharps, and e-waste) and non-hazardous waste (general trash and recyclables). Returnable packaging is used whenever practical.
- Environmental Management System (EMS): Yaskawa operates an EMS aligned to Yaskawa Group environmental management practices (Environmental management), using PDCA to set objectives, control risks, and drive continual improvement.
- Monitoring, Reporting & ESG Disclosure : Environmental KPIs and objectives are tracked, reviewed by management at least annually, and coordinated with Yaskawa Group ESG disclosures as applicable (ESG data).
- Grievance & Speak-Up : Associates and stakeholders can raise environmental concerns to management/EHS or via company grievance/ethics channels without fear of retaliation.
- Compliance and Continual Improvement: Yaskawa complies with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, sets environmental objectives, audits performance, and promotes continual improvement.
- Roles and Responsibilities:
- EHS Risk Mitigation Manager: Oversees the EMS, assessments, permits, compliance, and reporting.
- Supervisors and Managers: Ensure procedures are followed and risks are addressed.
- All Associates: Follow environmental protocols and report hazards.
- Training and Documentation: All associates receive training through General Safety Training. Records such as environmental assessments, permit documentation, monitoring logs, and hazardous-waste manifests are retained for at least five years (or longer where required).
Environmental Policy
Purpose and Scope of Policy
Yaskawa America, Inc. is committed to environmental stewardship in all operations. This Environmental Policy outlines our commitment to identifying and mitigating environmental risks, managing air, water, and waste responsibly, and integrating sustainable practices throughout our facilities.
This policy applies to all Yaskawa America, Inc. associates, contractors, and third-party service providers operating at or in connection with any Yaskawa facility.
Environmental Risk Assessment
The EHS Risk Mitigation Manager is responsible for ensuring an Environmental Risk Assessment is performed for all operations. This assessment will:
- Be updated annually or upon significant operational changes;
- Identify and evaluate environmental risks related to air, water, waste, energy use, emissions, and chemical handling; and
- Inform environmental controls, emergency response planning, and compliance measures.
Identification of Environmental Hazards
Yaskawa shall maintain a formal Environmental Hazard Identification Process, which includes:
- Routine inspections of all operational areas to identify potential environmental hazards,
- This inspection is included in the monthly safety audits. Auditors shall look for potential environmental hazards as well as potential safety hazards.
- A method for Yaskawa associates to report environmental concerns
- The “Report a Hazard” electronic form shall be used for hazards that do not pose an immediate threat.
- Hazards that pose an immediate threat to people, property, or the environment shall be reported immediately to the supervisor. The supervisor shall then immediately contact EHS at 262-391-1697.
- Evaluation of new equipment, chemicals, or processes for potential environmental impact.
- Note: “New equipment” refers to new types of equipment. Equipment that replicates items already used in operations does not require a new environmental assessment.
- Documentation and prioritization of identified hazards for mitigation or control.
Environmental Permits & Regulatory Reporting
Yaskawa obtains and maintains required environmental permits and authorizations (e.g., air, wastewater, stormwater, waste). We operate in accordance with permit conditions, conduct required monitoring, and submit accurate and timely reports to regulatory agencies.
Air Emissions
Yaskawa identifies emission sources, implements appropriate engineering/administrative controls (e.g., capture, filtration, abatement), maintains control equipment, and performs monitoring and recordkeeping per permit and legal requirements.
Energy Use & Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Yaskawa measures energy use and Scope 1/2 GHG emissions, sets reduction objectives, and implements efficiency projects and operational improvements. YAI supports Yaskawa Group decarbonization goals and energy-efficiency initiatives:
Environmental vision & targets and
Green process.
Water Stewardship
Yaskawa manages water consumption, protects water quality, implements wastewater and stormwater controls, and complies with applicable discharge permits and best practices to prevent pollution.
Materials Restrictions & Product Stewardship
Yaskawa complies with legal and customer requirements for restricted substances and product content. We apply Yaskawa Group eco-design and “Green Products” concepts to reduce lifecycle environmental impacts:
Green products.
Supplier Environmental Requirements
Suppliers are expected to meet Yaskawa’s environmental requirements, including compliance with applicable laws, restricted-substance controls, and responsible waste/emissions management. See
Yaskawa Procurement Guidelines.
