Consent to provide first aid is implied if the person is unconscious or unresponsive, unless the person is a child with the parent present. If the parent is present, they must give consent before you administer first aid.
First Aid
- Check for breathing
If the person is not breathing, call 911 and begin CPR
- If you suspect the person may have a spinal injury (for example, the person may have fallen from a higher level)
- Call 911
- Leave the person where they are
- Continue to monitor breathing
- If the person is breathing and not likely to have a spinal injury
- Gently roll the person to their side
- Adjust the person's legs so their hips and knees form right angles
- Tilt their head back slightly to open the airway
- Look for signs of severe bleeding
- If severe bleeding exists, call 911 and treat the bleeding
- Look at the persons wrists and neck to see if they are wearing medical alert jewelry
- If yes, follow the instructions on the jewelry
- If the reason for unconsciousness is unknown, and Naloxone (Narcan) is available, deliver the Naloxone per the instructions
- Call 911 if any of the following exists:
- Does not regain consciousness within one minute
- Loses, or has lost, control of bladder or bowels
- Not breathing
- Has diabetes
- Is pregnant
DO NOT
- Give an unconscious person anything by mouth
- Put a cushion beneath the person's head
- Splash water on the person
- Slap the person
- Leave an unconscious person unattended
