Unconscious / Non-Responsive Person

Consent to provide first aid is implied if the person is unconscious or unresponsive, unless the person is a child with the parent present. If the parent is present, they must give consent before you administer first aid.

First Aid

  1. Check for breathing
  2. If the person is not breathing, call 911 and begin CPR

  3. If you suspect the person may have a spinal injury (for example, the person may have fallen from a higher level)
    • Call 911
    • Leave the person where they are
    • Continue to monitor breathing
  4. If the person is breathing and not likely to have a spinal injury
    • Gently roll the person to their side
    • Adjust the person's legs so their hips and knees form right angles
    • Tilt their head back slightly to open the airway
  5. Look for signs of severe bleeding
    • If severe bleeding exists, call 911 and treat the bleeding
  6.  Look at the persons wrists and neck to see if they are wearing medical alert jewelry
    • If yes, follow the instructions on the jewelry
  7. If the reason for unconsciousness is unknown, and Naloxone (Narcan) is available, deliver the Naloxone per the instructions
  8.  Call 911 if any of the following exists:
    • Does not regain consciousness within one minute
    • Loses, or has lost, control of bladder or bowels
    • Not breathing
    • Has diabetes
    • Is pregnant

DO NOT
