ACTIVE SHOOTER - What to do during Active Event
- Get to safety helping others if it's possible without putting yourself in greater danger.
Our first instinct is to make sure others are safe. GET TO SAFETY. The time to learn and train others about what to do in an emergency is before an emergency occurs. Teach others what to do before an incident then trust that they will follow their training. Putting yourself in harms-way not only puts you in danger, but it can put others in danger.
- The priority is to get to safety. Follow these notification steps only when you are in a safe area or safely concealed
Notification
DO NOT pull the fire alarm.
If you can safely get to a company phone, and making the announcement does not put you in danger:
- Dial *6 to page
- Announce loudly "Active Shooter." Do not use code words that new associates or visitors might not understand.
- Yell as loud as you can, "Active shooter"
If you are unable to get to a company phone, and making the announcement does not put you in danger, yell as loud as you can "Active shooter." Repeat several times.
After you have alerted others of the danger, call 911.
Provide the 911 operator with the following information, as known:
- Location of shooter
- Number of suspects and types of weapons
- Description of suspect(s) and their possible location
- Suspect(s) direction of travel
- Location and condition of any known victims
Silence your phone and stay on the line until the 911 operator tells you to conclude the call

- Do not attempt to move wounded people unless it is to move them to safety

If the active shooter is nearby:

- Hide behind large items
- Remain quiet and motionless
THIRD CHOICE: FIGHT
If it's not possible to evacuate or hide, then consider self-defense, with these recommendations:
- Remain as calm as possible
- Dial 911, if possible to alert police to the active shooter's location
- If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the 911 operator to listen
Take action against the active shooter only when you believe your life is in imminent danger. Attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter as follows:
